Help Sixten's Foundation Establish Employer Contribution Programs. Many fans and supporters of Sixten's Foundation may not know that because we are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, we are eligible to be part of many employer-related sharing programs. Even in these tough economic times, these employers allow employees to automatically deduct contributions from their pay on a regular basis -- AND many employers are matching or giving a percentage themselves.

Please consider checking with your employer's human resources department about their policy on this type of giving. Sixten's Foundation can assist you and them with the IRS documentation that you need to complete the process. And, if you are interested in helping further, we can also work with your employer to notify other employees of the important work Sixten's Foundation is doing. Many people are willing to make these types of structured contributions, and we want to let you know that Sixten's Foundation is qualified, ready to assist with the paperwork, and sincerely grateful.

Thank you.Who we are:http://www.blogger.com/profile/02932021221367428188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1894294863792762381.post-90562857332864907742009-08-06T09:15:00.004-04:002009-08-06T09:32:44.326-04:00IN THE NEWS! Sixten's Foundation and Conductive Education Featured on Washington, D.C. ABC T.V. Network AffiliateSixten's Foundation is excited to announce that it has been featured on Washington, D.C.'s ABC Network television affiliate Channel 9.

The segment, in the works for some time, features Sixten Helm Kurz, the Prince George's County Public Schools, Anna Helm (Sixten's mom and Sixten's Foundation co-founder and vice president)and the pilot program the foundation has been working so hard to implement.

http://www.wusa9.com/video/default.aspx?aid=77997&storyid=89302

It should be noted that the segment wraps up with a statement implying that Prince George's County Public Schools is looking for funding for the position. This is not entirely accurate. We have received a commitment from them if we can locate a qualified Conductive Education instructor who can pass the necessary testing to get in place.

Please enjoy the segment, and if you are or know of a qualified Conductive Education instructor interested in being part of a groundbreaking program here, please contact Sixten's Foundation President Robert Kurz at bobbasses@aol.com. (www.sixten.org)

Working the with Prince George’s County Public School system in Prince George’s County, Maryland, the foundation has successfully completed a Conductive Education pilot program for a class of children with cerebral palsy during the 2008 – 2009 school year.

Prince George’s County Public Schools has notified us that it wishes to continue a Conductive Education program indefinitely, and a certified Conductive Education instructor is needed for the 2009 – 2010 school year. This is an as-of-yet unadvertised position, and we encourage qualified and interested conductors to contact us about the application procedure, job requirements, compensation package and relevant dates.

About the Prince George’s County Public School System
Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland is the 2nd largest school district in the state of Maryland and 18th largest in the United States guiding more than 140,000 students. Pay is competitive and would be commensurate with experience. According to official Prince George’s County information, the current salaries are, for a 10 month teaching position and teacher with 10 years of experience with only a bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.) would start at $54,863 with full benefits and retirement, bachelor's degree plus 30 would start at $57,446 and bachelor's plus 45 or masters would start at $60,143. With 20 years of experience a teachers with only a bachelor's would start at $58,148 with full benefits and retirement, bachelor's plus 30 would start at $76,826, and bachelor's plus 45 or masters would start at $80,436. Please note: candidates with far less than the 10 year experience example cited here are encouraged to apply. We have not heard of any minimum experience requirement with the proper certification.

Qualifications
Successful candidate must be a Conductive Education Teacher with a minimum of a four-year degree from a qualified Conductive Education educational program such as those offered by the Peto Institute in Budapest, University of Birmingham England or Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Under most situations, this Conductive Education accreditation will suffice as the “bachelor's degree” requirement in Special Education required by the State of Maryland in order to be hired and certified as a Conductive Education/Special Education Teacher. We can help clarify this further.

Additionally, In order to be certified, one must take and pass the Praxis I and Praxis II exams. Praxis exams are scheduled for July 25, 2009, so anyone interested will have to start registering for these exams as soon as possible! (We apologize for the short notice. News of the continuation of the program just reached us.)

Here is a link to information on the Praxis Exams. Exam registration and testing costs for qualified applicants will be reimbursed by Sixten’s Foundation, Inc. upon acceptance of the position by the candidate with Prince George’s County Public Schools.
http://www.education.umd.edu/EDSP/current/graduate/PraxisIIinfo09.html

For further information, contact Robert Kurz, President, Sixten’s Foundation, Inc. at 301.805.9406 or through bobbasses@aol.com.

Please pass this information along to anyone whom you feel might be interested.Who we are:http://www.blogger.com/profile/02932021221367428188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1894294863792762381.post-1369169810555749092009-05-08T17:58:00.003-04:002009-05-08T18:46:47.974-04:00READY! The instructions for participating are in the posts below, but here are some things to remember:

1) If you don't know anyone running who you can sponsor and can't make it yourself, you can still donate to Sixten's Foundation through here or the PayPal button on this blog. Remember, Sixten's sponsorship sheet gets all of these donations, and we'd love to see him win by getting the most donations!

2) We have a very talented designer and volunteer working with us named Lorenzo d'Aubert. He designed the event flyers you may have seen, some other materials and the smashing t-shirt pictured in this post. If you recall, the t-shirts are available for free to anyone who raised $50 in sponsorships, but you can also buy one (or more!) for only $15 each. They are of terrific quality (Jerzees, Heavyweight blend, 50/50) and available in Adult S, M, L and XL and Child sizes S, M and L. You can send the money to PayPal, drop a check to the Sixten's Foundation mail address or just let Anna or Robert know you want one at 301.805.9406 or sixtensfoundation@gmail.com.

3) Anna and Robert will be at the race by about 7:15 a.m. Remember, this event is the Riverfront Revolution race, and "Steps for Sixten" is simply our group within it. Greg Taylor of Riverfront Revolution has very generously consented to allow us to share the race space with his group, but their registration area will have no information on Sixten's Foundation. Please call Anna's cell phone at 301.805.9406 if you need help locating us.

Finally, here are directions to National Harbor: http://www.nationalharbor.com/Directions.aspx

If you haven't registered yet, there's still time. We wanted to take a moment, however, to clarify some details related to the event.

Some of the initial promotional materials may have given the impression that “Steps for Sixten” was a part of the Riverfront Revolution 10K, 5K, 1 Mile Fun Run, and Health & Wellnessfest event. This is NOT accurate. “Steps for Sixten” participants will simply be participating in the planned Riverfront Revolution event at National Harbor as part of our fundraiser initiative. You are still required to register through www.RiverfrontRevolution.com, but Sixten’s Foundation and Steps for Sixten is not in any way affiliated with the Riverfront Revolution event.

So wear your Sixten’s Foundation or “Steps for Sixten” t-shirts hats and buttons if you have them, get your sponsors signed up beforehand, and we’ll see you on May 9 at the National Harbor. Remember, this is the Riverfront Revolution event, and Mr. Greg Taylor of that organization has kindly allowed us to walk or run with his Riverfront Revolution participants.

Thanks!Who we are:http://www.blogger.com/profile/02932021221367428188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1894294863792762381.post-19156834596260703352009-03-31T12:02:00.000-04:002009-04-08T11:05:54.612-04:00Steps for Sixten! The Run and Walk for EveryoneSupport Sixten’s Foundation (www.sixten.org) on Saturday, May 9th at a 10K, 5K, 1 Mile Fun Run or Walk at the New National Harbor.

Take steps for children like Sixten who can’t take steps for themselves, and help us to raise money for this important organization. Sixten’s Foundation, Inc. is committed to providing Conductive Education programs in public schools for children with cerebral palsy and similar neuromuscular conditions. These children cannot do it on their own, and neither can we, without your help.

If you are a runner, great! If you’re not, don’t be intimidated. All levels are welcomed, and even a 1 Mile stroll (with strollers!) will help us realize our goals.

Here is what you need to know:

What: The main sponsor of the race is the Inaugural Riverfront Revolution 10K, 5K, 1 Mile Fun Run, and Health & Wellnessfest at the New National Harbor. Please register for the Inaugural Riverfront Revolution event here: http://www.riverfrontrevolution.com/register.html. The Riverfront Revolution is graciously allowing Sixten’s Foundation to share its “track” with those taking “Steps of Sixten.” You can obtain your Sixten’s Foundation pledge form at www.Sixten.org. Ask your friends, family and co-workers to sponsor you per mile, kilometer or a flat amount when you complete the race.
When: Saturday May 9th, 2009.

Start time: Registration begins at 7:00am. 10K/5K start at 8:00am, 1 Mile Run starts at 8:15am. The wellness expo, music, and farmers market will follow.

Starting Location: Blocks from National Harbor Waterfront St. and Gaylord Hotel. Here are directions. http://www.nationalharbor.com/Directions.aspx

Sponsorship Gifts!

Raise $50.00 for Sixten’s Foundation, and receive a terrific “Steps for Sixten” t-shirt! (It’s cooler looking than it sounds.)

Raise $200.00 for Sixten’s Foundation and receive a Sixten’s Foundation runner’s cap. (Although after this we’ll never ask you to run again, so you can use it for any other non-running purpose you’d like.)

Raise $500.00 for Sixten’s Foundation and receive the t-shirt, runner’s cap and a remarkable, home-cooked Swedish three-course dinner at the home of Anna Helm and Robert Kurz, the founders of Sixten’s Foundation. This special fundraising event was to raise money for Sixten's Foundation.

As many of you know, we are now facing the completion of the pilot program for Conductive Education within the Prince George’s County Public School District, and the need for continued funding is critical to our long-term success. “Sparklers for Sixten” is just one of several fundraisers we have planned in the near term. We realize the economy is tight for many of you, that is why we are committed to developing fun, interesting or healthy events. Please read the next post about “Steps for Sixten,” and start stretching those legs!

Again, we appreciate the generosity of Lia Sophia consultant Krissy Sample. We sold over $1500 worth of beautiful, quality, contemporary jewelry and Sixten's Foundation receives a percentage of each sale! And don’t worry if you didn’t make it to the party, you can always order your jewelry directly from Krissy's Lia Sophia website and participate in the fund-raiser through April 1 by visiting: http://www.liasophia.com/sites/ksample. The foundation will still receive a percentage, and you will look fabulous! (You may have to copy and paste the link into your browser to get directed to the website.)

Here are the specials available to you!

Buy two items at the regular price and get your third most expensive item for half price. In addition, you can receive up to three items at half off. Essentially, buy two items and get up to four items at half price (your two least expensive items are the full price items).

Thank you again everyone, and we look forward to speaking with you soon!Who we are:http://www.blogger.com/profile/02932021221367428188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1894294863792762381.post-53310598310468623822009-03-23T12:00:00.001-04:002009-03-23T12:02:04.380-04:00PayPal Works!Thank you for being patient while we addressed our PayPal issue. It appears the foundation raised approximately $40,000 towards its $67,000 goal to cover expenses for the Conductive Education program for the 2008-2009 school year.

We would like to thank the many very generous donors who graciously offered fine musical instruments, bows, strings, lessons, services and other items. It was quite overwhelming to have this level of support from the musical community -- and from people neither Anna nor I have ever met.

Secondly, we would like to thank the bidders. We realize many of you had other options where you could purchase these items, but know that 100% of your bid went to our foundation and its efforts to help children with cerebral palsy and similar conditions.

And we would like to send out an important THANK YOU to Madeleine Crouch, the executive director of the International Society of Bassists. Her enthusiastic and generous efforts helped the foundation reach these important members of the musical community and insure our first auction was a success. Thank you, Madeleine!

We also wish to apologize again for the PayPal glitch towards the end of the auction. Apparently the eBay auction was "flagged" because of the volume of bidding and the dollars involved (we think). Since this was a new account with eBay and the foundation didn't really have a history with them, they have asked us for additional information about shipment of items and some other documentation. We're still waiting for some of those overseas items to be delivered so they can lift our PayPal restriction. We have been told by PayPal that this is due to an unusual amount of activity related to the auction, and we have complied with the information request they sent to us.

Basically, since this was our first online auction with eBay (connected to PayPal), they got a little concerned that so much commerce was taking place by a new seller(Sixten's Foundation) all at once. They wanted to be assured that this was all legitimate and asked us for shipping verification numbers of items we've sent and other information, and we provided that to them. It is our hope that they verify this as quickly as possible and remove the PayPal restriction about accepting payment.

If you purchased an item and wish to pay for it, you can still mail your payment to:

Sixten's Foundation, Inc.
P.O. Box 420
Glenn Dale, MD 20769

If you send a money order or bank or cashier's check, the item(s) you purchase will go out by the next business day. If you send a personal check, the item(s) will be sent as soon as it clears the Sixten's Foundation bank account. Please make checks payable to Sixten's Foundation and indicate the item description or eBay number on the check.

We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to resolve this as quickly as we can. Thank you again for your generosity and support of Sixten's Foundation!

Robert Kurz
Anna Helm KurzWho we are:http://www.blogger.com/profile/02932021221367428188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1894294863792762381.post-83515178740316416102008-12-16T09:45:00.000-05:002008-12-16T09:47:03.942-05:00Wow! And THANK YOU!We are so completely grateful, humbled and astonished at the success of the first “Conduct This!” auction to benefit Sixten’s Foundation. We received approximately 40 musical instruments, musical items and related services, generously donated by people like you, and often complete strangers to this foundation and our family. Once they were posted on eBay, the bidding was fast, furious and determined, and the foundation raised approximately $30,000! Again, wow!

By way of a brief background, Sixten’s Foundation was established to provide improved education for children with cerebral palsy and related disabilities through conductive education. Our mission is to make conductive education available in public school systems such as what we’ve done in Prince George’s County, Maryland. This pilot program is running now through the 2008-2009 school year and has been funded by Sixten’s Foundation. The costs for the first year, including bringing specialized conductive education instructor Robert Demeter to the United States from the Peto Institute in Hungary, will exceed $75,000 -- so we’re halfway there.

We wanted to let you know for many of the items, we had to set reserve prices we felt were fair to the bidders, the donors of the items and services and the foundation. It would have been difficult, and inappropriate, for us to sell the items too inexpensively. We hope you understand.

That said, if you bid on an item and it did not reach the reserve, please do not hesitate to contact us at sixtensfoundation@gmail.com with an offer. We promise you we will seriously consider all reasonable offers. The items that remain unsold will we reposted in another auction probably in the spring. If you did successfully bid on an item, we are finalizing the auction now and will be contacting you about final shipping charges and payment.

Again, thank you again for your enthusiastic support. If you weren’t in the market for anything we had to offer through the auction and still want to help, please consider making a donation through our PayPal account here. Can yours?
Sixten’s Foundation has been the beneficiary of a corporate fund raising effort by the area musical instrument company Prodigy Instruments (www.prodigyinstruments.com). Earlier this year, Prodigy Instruments announced that it would donate 5% of its sales during the program, and Sixten's Foundation is now in receipt of its first contribution -- a check of over $1,000. (Learn more here: http://www.prodigyinstruments.com/donate_to_sixten.asp)

One of the owners of Prodigy Instruments is Robert Kurz. He is also the president of Sixten's Foundation and the father of the foundation's namesake Sixten, the boy at the center of and the inspiration for the foundation and its mission to improve the lives of children like him. Robert and his business partner Mike Lindvall decided Sixten's Foundation was a natural beneficiary for their efforts. Prodigy Instruments has long been involved with philanthropic endeavors that have benefited the community including the Prodigy Instrument's Philharmonic Donation Project. Read more about that important program here: http://www.prodigyinstruments.com/Donate_To_An_Orchestra.asp

Do you have a company, large or small, that might be able to help Sixten's Foundation with a similar program? If you would like to talk to Robert about it, he would be happy to hear from you. It isn't difficult to establish, and such a program may even help you to increase sales. We will certainly help you to promote it here and among the outreach we have with our extensive and interested mailing lists. Please give Robert a call at Prodigy Instruments at 301.805.9407.

Thanks again to everyone for your continued interest in and support of Sixten's Foundation!

Who we are:http://www.blogger.com/profile/02932021221367428188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1894294863792762381.post-35008466092871585742008-09-30T13:07:00.001-04:002008-09-30T13:42:58.471-04:00Good Luck, John Deasy. And Thanks.
In considering the impact Prince George’s County Public Schools superintendant John Deasy made to education during his tenure here in Maryland, it may be an historic class of children with cerebral palsy who will most benefit.

It was John Deasy who, with his vision and generosity of time and spirit, ushered in the pilot program that made conductive education an option for these children with severe physical and mental learning disabilities.

From the beginning, Dr. Deasy listened to what the parents of these children had to say and opened the doors to the school district, literally and figuratively, to this important educational curriculum. He demonstrated remarkable insight in looking past the status quo when it came to improving how these children learn. By rallying support within the school district from the top down to join the enthusiastic parents working from the bottom up, he cultivated the healthy and successful conductive education program now serving as a national model in Prince George’s County. Because of Dr. Deasy and the supportive educators and administrators working with him, this district is now responsible for some of the area’s most challenged students learning and wanting to learn beyond what was previously available to them.

The Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation is fortunate to have you join them. Please know that Sixten’s Foundation and its friends and supporters wish you the best of luck with your new vocation. We are not sure we will ever be able to adequately thank you for positively affecting the future of so many children, but know that what you did will always remain in our hearts and minds.
Who we are:http://www.blogger.com/profile/02932021221367428188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1894294863792762381.post-21293400480279341162008-09-13T13:53:00.001-04:002008-09-13T13:54:18.041-04:00Ways You Can Help Sixten’s Foundation
We are pleased to be asked by many of you how you can help us to achieve our goals here at Sixten’s Foundation.
